Shadowing...what is it, how do you do it and why?

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a lawyer, an artist, a business person, or something else?  How do you find out if that is what you want to be when you grow up? What would it be like to live in their shoes for a day or even for a few hours?  Shadowing is your answer...and it is FREE!

Shadowing is one of the most important tools you can use to understand what a person does professionally.  It simply means you follow someone around as if you were their shadow as they go about their day.  This gives you the opportunity to observe what they do in a typical day, from phone calls to emails to meetings- and hopefully they have time to explain some of it to you.  The goal of shadowing is to provide you with an idea of whether or not you would like to go into the same profession.

If you want to shadow someone, ask them and be respectful of their time.  Most professionals that you ask will feel flattered and will say yes.  Keep in mind that not everyday is an exciting day and most days are spent in the office in front of a computer (not too much fun to shadow...huh?).  However, if you provide them with a range of dates/times that work for you (example, 2 weeks in August), they may be able to select a day that will be of most value and fun to both of you.

I'm always looking to increase the number of fantastic lawyers, so let me know if you want to shadow me.
